Add a commission

Record agreed custom work, issue a deposit invoice, record Zelle or check payments, and issue the balance invoice and payment receipts.

Use Add a commission when a client has agreed to pay you to make a custom work. Studio Operations keeps the agreement, deposit, balance and invoices together in Sales, with the artwork as a private draft.

Available on Studio and Studio Plus. Free and Showcase show the commission control locked. Use the upgrade offer if you need this feature.

Zelle or check for now. Commission invoices do not have a card-payment link yet. Recording a payment confirms money you have already received; it does not charge the collector.

Add the agreed work

  1. Open Sales in the sidebar and choose Add a commission in the header. A window opens.
  2. Enter a Working title and choose the Kind of work.
  3. Choose the client under Collector, or enter someone new and their email.
  4. Enter the Agreed price. Set the Deposit percentage; it starts at 50%.
  5. Check Agreed on. Add Expected delivery if known; it is optional and appears on the invoice.
  6. Add size, materials and a private note when useful.
  7. Check Zelle to and Checks payable to. These use your saved studio payment details and can be entered in this window for future invoices. Checks use your studio address from Settings.
  8. Choose Add commission. To leave without creating it, choose Cancel.

Give the client the deposit invoice

Find the commission in Sales and open Deposit invoice. Check the title, client, agreed price, deposit and payment instructions. Print the invoice or save it as a PDF to share with the client. Work starts once the deposit has arrived.

Record the deposit after it arrives

  1. Confirm that you received the Zelle payment or check.
  2. Choose Deposit received on the commission.
  3. Choose how it was paid, check Paid on, and add the Zelle confirmation or check number under Reference if useful.
  4. Choose Record payment.

The Deposit receipt is now available, and the work stays reserved for this client while you make it. The balance remains unpaid.

Invoice and record the balance

When the work is finished, open Balance invoice. Check it and share it with the client. The balance is due before shipping.

  1. After the balance has arrived, choose Balance received.
  2. Check the payment method, date and reference, then choose Record payment.
  3. Open the balance receipt for that payment. Keep both the deposit and balance receipts with the sale.

Once paid in full, the commission continues as a normal sale and the artwork is marked Sold. Continue with shipping and tracking and the relevant sale paperwork.

Find the commission again

Use the Find box on Sales to look for its working title or client. You can also search for commission, deposit, balance, custom work or invoice in Support to find this guide.
